SKIPWITH NEWS – Summer School Information – Posted 5/28/2020

Good afternoon,

This message is about summer school options for all students who are currently in elementary school.

HCPS summer offerings for all students, known as “Edflix Season 3”, begins on July 13, 2020. The “summer season” is intended to prepare all students for the start of the 2020-21 school year with additional LifeReady learning experiences through several pathways. Important: LifeReady content-review and enrichment experiences are being made available for all students, which is different than in previous years. For instance, students who typically would have been identified to engage in Summer Academy for remediation, or in exceptional education extended-school-year programming, will also take part. This is possible because of the variety of pathways available to students.

Summer experiences for elementary students are described below:

Pathway 1: Teacher-directed virtual learning experiences to support identified students in need of foundational literacy and numeracy skills delivered by teachers over a four-week period (July 13 – August 6). Parents and guardians will receive communication from the school if their student qualifies to participate in this pathway.

*Pathway 2: Online resources embedded in a daily schedule to support students in need of foundational vocabulary development over a four-week period (July 13 – August 6). Available to access anytime, according to family’s needs. Parents and guardians will receive communication from the school if data indicates their child would benefit from participation in this pathway.

*Pathway 3: Online resources embedded into a daily schedule to support foundational learning and enrichment for all students for the upcoming grade level over a four-week period (July 13 – August 6). Available to access anytime, according to a family’s needs. This pathway is recommended for and open to any student who may benefit from continued review, application and enrichment in preparation for the coming school year.

*For pathways 2 and 3, teachers will be available during virtual office hours (3 hours each day) to answer parent questions, clarify content, assist with choosing resources and/or provide feedback, Monday through Thursday from July 13 – August 6.

Exceptional Education:
Exceptional education support systems will be provided for students with disabilities using options that run from July 13 through August 6. One option is for students who meet criteria for extended-school-year services, and the other option is for students who do not qualify for these services.

Option 1:  Students whose IEP teams have determined that they meet criteria for extended-school-year services will have access to synchronous, disability-related services and support through virtual platforms as outlined in their individualized plans. These may include teleservices for speech, OT/PT, consultation with special education service providers, or direct instruction through virtual sessions with an exceptional education teacher. (July 13 – August 6)

Option 2: Students with a disability who do not meet criteria for extended-school-year services will have the same level of access to learning opportunities provided for all HCPS students. Accommodations to support students’ access to the educational materials will continue to be provided.

Again, this message is about the overall plan and various options for students. If your student would benefit from Pathways 1 or 2, then you will receive additional communication from your student’s teacher. If you would like your student to participate in Pathway 3, additional information will be available prior to July 13.

If you have questions, please contact me at: tasmith@henrico.k12.va.us

SKIPWITH NEWS – Chromebook – POSTED 5/19/2020

Skipwith Elementary families,

This message is for families who have not already picked up an HCPS Chromebook or your family needs an HCPS-issued Chromebook computer for online learning.

Chromebooks will be available at the four remote Mobile Technology Support Hubs.  Guardian/parent should be listed as an authorized contact in the division’s PowerSchool student information system and bring identification to validate their student’s registration at a Henrico County school.  Borrowing a Chromebook requires verbal agreement to take care of the Chromebook and charger, use it for instructional purposes only and to return Chromebook and charger at a later date to the school division.

If families are unable to travel to pick up a Chromebook, another communication and solution is forthcoming.

Mobile Technology Hub Sites:

Deep Run High School

4801 Twin Hickory Road, Glen Allen, Va.

Douglas Freeman High School

8701 Three Chopt Road, Henrico, Va.

Hermitage High School

8301 Hungary Spring Road, Henrico, Va.

Highland Springs High School

15 S. Oak Ave., Highland Springs, Va.

Monday through Friday.  8:30-10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. We will begin deployment of Chromebooks from these sites on Tuesday, 5-12-20

Questions and answers:

Who is eligible to receive a Chromebook?

  • Any Henrico elementary student who is registered at an HCPS elementary school and does not have a laptop or Chromebook at home. Families indicated their need for a Chromebook in surveys we sent out in April.

What is needed for a Chromebook to work?

  • Internet service is required for the Chromebook to function and connect to digital resources that will be provided to students by their teachers.
  • Each student’s HCPS Google account must be used to log into the Chromebook.
  • There is no educational software or content saved or stored on the Chromebooks.

Where should I go if the Chromebook is broken or does not work?

  • Remember, to function well, all Chromebooks and chargers must be cared for appropriately.
  • If Chromebooks develop problems, they can be brought to a mobile technology hub to be turned in for repair. Hours of operations are Monday through Friday from 8:30-10:30 a.m. and 2-4 p.m. Mobile hub locations are:

    • Deep Run High School (4801 Twin Hickory Road, Glen Allen, Va.)
    • Douglas Freeman High School (8701 Three Chopt Road, Henrico, Va.)
    • Hermitage High School (8301 Hungary Spring Road, Henrico, Va.)
    • Highland Springs High School (15 S. Oak Ave., Highland Springs, Va.)

What if I don’t have internet service in my home for the Chromebook?

  • HCPS will loan you a Wi-Fi hot-spot device if they are available.  At this current time we do not have any Wi-Fi hot spot devices in our inventory.  We have placed an order for more but due to high demand we are not able to provide and actual arrival date.  Additionally, Comcast is offering free and low-cost internet at this time for qualifying families. To see if you qualify for their promotion, visit Comcast’s “Internet Essentials” website. The website for the promotion is internetessentials.com/covid19.  If you want to apply for Internet Essentials over the phone please call 1-855-8-INTERNET (1-855-846-8376).  Comcast’s call center hours of operation are from 8 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week.

Is the Chromebook set up to safely avoid access to inappropriate web content?

  • Yes. Every Chromebook is filtered by HCPS’ web filtering system to provide as secure an environment for students as possible. Students should use technology responsibly at all times.

When do I need to return the Chromebook and charger my family has received?

  • A date will be announced later for the return of each Chromebook. Until then, each Chromebook and charger must be properly cared for.

Where can I find HCPS’ online learning materials for elementary students?

Thank you for reading,

Todd Smith

For those who would like to send an appreciation gift to a teacher, consider a digital gift card or check https://linkprotect.cudasvc.com/url?a=https%3a%2f%2f%2f%2ftinyurl.com%2fteacherlist2020&c=E,1,y029KaP0rxoRp5RUjGuJij5HK5RN8z2aG8hP-gKj3vPSana8YQckyXkOvsUJUmm3qDtMMnkDfMiyoiu5fc1lNjJSG3dNkwUpfIBJD1j_pW96Og,,&typo=1 to see if your teacher has an Amazon wish list that you can order an item from and it will be mailed to them (If your teacher doesn’t have a list yet, check back later in the week because some more wish lists are still being added)

We also encourage you to come up with your own unique virtual ways of showing your Skipwith teachers how much you appreciate them!
